School History

The HISD Community Services School, established as a department in the early 1970s and becoming a full-fledged school in the 1994-1995 school year, addresses the evolving educational needs of students in Houston, its surrounding areas, and globally.

A "School Without Walls" Approach

The school is notable for its innovative "school without walls" philosophy, extending its reach beyond traditional classrooms to encompass:

  • Home-bound services: Providing education to students unable to attend regular school due to health or other reasons.

  • Agency partnerships: Collaborating with various organizations to offer comprehensive support.

  • Hospital-based education: Serving students receiving medical care, ensuring continuity in their learning.

This approach allows the Community Services School to cater to a diverse range of student populations with unique academic and non-academic needs.

Evolution and Focus

Over the decades, the HISD Community Services School has continually adapted its methods, expanding its focus to include:

  • Socio-emotional support: Recognizing the crucial role of emotional well-being in student success.

  • Community partnerships: Fostering collaborations to enrich learning experiences and provide additional resources.

  • Improved learning outcomes: Dedicated to enhancing academic achievement for all students.

  • Developing future graduates: Aiming to mold well-rounded individuals prepared for success beyond high school.

The Community Services School remains a vital part of HISD's commitment to providing flexible, comprehensive, and supportive educational opportunities for all students.
